FIELD TIPS for a successful Cape/Hide harvest.
1. Shoulder Mount: Skin the animal from the middle of the rib to the bottom of the head. Too short of a hide means shortened mount or could result in the need of having to purchase another cape.
2. Once skinned, cool down the cape as quickly as possible. Never roll up the cape or hide; leave it flat, especially in the cooling process. (This eliminates hair slippage) Also, remove as much blood as possible; do not use water. Once cooled, loosely fold the hide.
3. Get the animal to the taxidermist ASAP. Personally, I would rather you being me the cape with the head still intact. It is very easy to ruin a cape if you are not experienced in skinning the head out. If you are questioning yourself, guide, or buddy, do not attempt it.
4. If you are going on a guided hunt your outfitter should know how to properly skin your animal. But do yourself a favor and be present to ensure proper procedures are taken.
